Fresh air, car-free streets, parks as the eye can see, ecological energy and people who care about the environment. Seems the description of an ideal city in which you would like to live! Here are some settlements that really deserve the label of “eco-cities” (green city)!
VANCOUVER, CANADA
It was the city that dared to cut carbon emissions by 33% over the next five years. That will not be hard, because at the moment it works with 90% renewable energy. With over a hundred parks, surrounded by ocean and mountains, Vancouver is perfect for outdoor recreation, kayaking, skating, mountain biking and snowboarding.
The town encourages walking in pedestrian markets, bike rides or electric scooter rides, greatly reducing the number of highway construction sites. Vancouver has the highest number of green certificates for all buildings in North America and 48% of food sources are local.
CURITIBA, BRAZIL
Curitiba has the lowest emissions of greenhouse gases per capita, 2.1 tons of carbon dioxide emitted. No wonder, especially as 30% of residents use private cars, the rest are traveling with public transportation.
Moreover, the city works with renewable energy at a rate of over 80%. According to US magazine “Reader’s Digest”, Curitiba has the best quality of life of the great Latin American cities. The markets are full of local products, directly from local farms famous for sheep farming.
COPENHAGEN, DENMARK
The city of cyclists has over 300 kilometers of tracks. Until 2025 Danes want to devise the transport based on hydrogen and hydrogen cells. Furrowed by numerous canals, parks and the fascinating Tivoli gardens, Copenhagen is Europe’s green city. Here, the polluter pays, and due tax on sulfur and sewage, the concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus and organic content in wastewater were significantly reduced. There are also taxes on PVC, on the CO2 emitted by cars and on minerals phosphates added to fodders.
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA
San Francisco is the “greenest” city in USA in terms of energy, green buildings, transport and water and air quality. The streets are invaded by hybrid cars, and residents use alternative energy for electricity. Many buildings have solar panels installed on the roof. It is prohibited the marketing of plastic bags for shopping and the garbage recycling is mandatory.
