The most big of the islands of the Ionian Sea, Kefalonia offers to the travelers sandy beaches along a sea of azure blue, almost perfect. The idyllic picture is completed by dwarf pine forests that plunge dramatically into the sea, by fishermen villages, and by nice architecture and facades of houses in the Venetian style.
Captain Corelli Island
Kefalonia became more known in Europe, after here was filmed Captain Corelli’s Mandolin in 2001, starring Nicolas Cage. Throughout the filming, Kefalonia visits were reduced considerably, but with the release of the blockbuster, the island gained even more ampleness. Today, tourists from around the world come here, attracted by the fairytale beauty of the landscapes, fascinated by the local cuisine, the cheerful people, but also by the ancient constructions.
Kefalonia is the realm of the Caretta Caretta turtles, which are found in large number on the island. The turtles lay their eggs quietly on the less popular beaches of the island. Argostoli is their favorite beach, where tourists come every year in large number to admire them.
Have you ever imagined how paradise looks like?
Heaven has sandy beaches bathed by the most crystalline waters and hidden caves … Once you get in Kefalonia, you have to go to Melissani and walk around in the gondola on the slightly salty waters of the lake with purple glints.
The cave is the most visited landmark of the destination and it is shrouded in legends. Sad stories say that the lake formed after the nymph Melissanthe was rejected by the god Pan. You should know that inside the cave are organized classical music concerts every day, 15 minutes each, thanks to good acoustics of the place.
