No matter how much you take care of the wood flooring, is almost impossible to completely avoid scratching or tarnishing them. Therefore, most often the parquet in your home will need special care and appearance changes designed to remove obsolete look.
Here are some useful tips on refinishing wood floors that will give a whole new life to the room that you renovate:
1. The checks that precede the transformation
Before you start to renovate, you must make sure that the flooring in your home resists a transformation. Pull a plaque from it and measure its thickness. Ask a specialist to decide if you can polish and repaint, considering the plaque thickness.
2. Polishing
To remove specks and scratches on the floor, you’ll need a special buffer and a lot of skill. Test the buffer in a safe place until you get used to the specific movements and manage to master the technique of grinding. Continue until the entire surface of the floor smoothes in a more uniform way. Make sure you have at hand a vacuum cleaner with which to clean dust and residue from sanding. If you can not handle alone or you don’t have time, call on the help of a specialist.
3. Keeping the natural color or changing it
If the floor you want to transform is made of wood, you can easily change its color using dye mixtures. Depending on the intensity of the desired color, you have to dilute the dye with water or special solutions. Test the color in a sheltered spot before covering the entire floor.
4. Varnishing
Give shine to the parquet using special polyurethane varnish, water-based or oil-based. The advantage of the water-based varnish is that it dries in just three hours, while the oil-based varnish needs at least 8 hours to dry completely, although the affordable price makes it more tempting. In any case, if you want to not encounter such aesthetic problems when it comes to flooring, simply refresh the varnish layer every two years.
