Montecristo island in the Mediterranean is one of the most inaccessible islands. It became famous after Alexandre Dumas described it in his novel “The Count of Monte Cristo”.
Only 1,000 tourists can visit the famous island in a year. But they have to enroll on a waiting list. The wait can last at least three years, but it is worth it.
According to legend, on the island of Montecristo lie hidden treasures of famous pirates even today. Rumors about the treasures of the island began to circulate since the thirteenth century. At that time, the St. Mamilian Monastery, which was located on the island, became one of the wealthiest in Europe.
Meanwhile, some argue that the Turkish pirate Red Beard hid here on the island much of the gold looted during his expeditions of the sixteenth century.
In 1860, the Kingdom of Italy annexed Montecristo, conceding it to Marquis Ginori in 1889, who turned it into a nature reserve. In 1971, the island returned to the Italian state, which in 2008 opened it to the public.
