Situated near the center of Turkey, at about 300 km from Ankara, Cappadocia or “The country of beautiful horses” is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the moment. The underground cities, the landforms artfully sculpted by volcanoes and the attractions of the region transform this region into a dream destination for summer vacation.
Here’s what you can do if you go this summer in Cappadocia.
BALLOON RIDE
Balloon rides over valleys are specific to Cappadocia. The bizarre forms of relief can be seen better from above, but you need to have money for this fun, because it is the most expensive of your vacation. A one-hour balloon ride costs around 150 euros, but the experience is worth all the money. Many of those who lived it say they had magical moments.
VISIT THE UNDERGROUND CITIES
One of the biggest attractions of Cappadocia is represented by underground cities, carved into stone cliffs. Goreme, Kaymakli, Nevsehir, Avanos and Derinkuyu are the most important.
Reserve more time for visiting Goreme, known for the spectacular “chimneys of fairies”, rock formations shaped by volcanic eruptions, rainfall and wind in the form of huge, conical chimneys. In Goreme you can visit an open air museum, and numerous churches.
It is said that the underground cities date back to the Middle Ages. Currently, some of them are inhabited, but locals care for them, to attract tourists.
ACCOMMODATE IN THE CAVE
Not really in the cave, but in a hotel set in the cave. Although you think about a dark, moist and not at all inviting, you’ll be surprised to see how good the rooms look. Not as luxurious as a 5 star hotel, but they are clean and decent. There are turks who are coming to Cappadocia just to enjoy this unique experience.
Walks through the valleys of Cappadocia, visits in souvenir shops and creation of your own clay objects in Avanos are attractions that complement a dream vacation in this magical region.
SPOIL YOURSELF WITH THE TRADITIONAL FOOD
When you get tired of visiting Cappadocia, stop in a terrace or a restaurant and delight yourself with traditional food. Tea is the star throughout Turkey, so after lunch you can enjoy a quiet cup of fragrant tea or if you prefer something sweet, a slice of fresh watermelon.
