5 rules of etiquette when you decorate the table. What is totally prohibited

You are preparing an elegant dinner and you do not know how to arrange the table? Beyond the number of appetizers, the knives and forks on the table, there are some subtle aspects that need to be considered to decorate the table perfectly. Here they are:

table decoration

1. The color of the tablecloths

Even if you want to stand out with your nonconformist character, at a formal dinner you should keep in mind one important rule: the tablecloth must be white, ivory or cream-colored, says the leading expert William Hanson, quoted by the British newspaper “The Daily Mail “.

Total forbidden: black.

2. The shape of the plates

Also regarding the dishes there are no rules. If you can get away with their number (2 instead of 3 for example), you can not escape with their shape and color. At a formal dinner, the color is white, and the shape is round.

Total forbidden: square plates.

3. Napkins

If you imagine that paper napkins keep you out of trouble, think again. No matter how beautiful they may be, these can be accepted at lunch. However, they should be thick, good quality, not colored in dozens of shades, but more simple, even in one color. For dinner you must use cloth towels.

Total forbidden: paper napkins at dinner.

4. Glasses and bottles

Oversized wine glasses are history. They had a brief heyday, but you should forget about them. Use classic wine glasses, medium sized, depending on the color of the wine. The bottle of wine must never sit on the table, but on a table nearby, where wine will be served whenever needed.

Total forbidden: glasses and bottles of beer on the table.

5. Unnecessary accessories

The fish knife, inherited from the Victorian era, it is useless today when the most fish is served boneless. Use normal knives and forks, etiquette expert advises. Also, the fork for grapes is an ancient accessory that should be banished from the table.

Total forbidden: candles for a lunch. Accepted for dinner.
